Menotti’s The Medium, Saturday June 18 at 7pm
The Opera Company of Brooklyn (OCB) will present Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium on June 18. The opera, written by the composer of such famous works as Amahl and the Night Visitors and Amelia Goes to the Ball, was the first work to bring its composer international success. This compacted drama in two acts, written for five singers and a dance-mime role, tells the story of a fraudulent medium who is driven insane after her first actual encounter with a supernatural power.
The cast for OCB’s performance includes Kristin Young as Monica, Barbara Staffen as Madame Flora (Baba), Steven Fasano as Mr. Gobineau, Andrea Howland as Mrs. Gobineau, Julie DeVaere as Mrs. Nolan and Lucas Barkley as Pianist.
Kristin Young is a coloratura from Philadelphia, now residing in Brooklyn. She has sung many roles with OCB including Adina (L’elixir d’amore), Norina (Don Pasquale) and Zerlina (Don Giovanni). She also appeared as the First Flower in Gotham Chamber Opera’s innovative production of Daniel Catan’s La Hija de Rappaccini held at the Brooklyn Botanical Garden.
Mezzo-soprano Barbara Staffen returns to OCB with her interpretation of Madame Flora. She has tackled the heavy roles of Wagner and Puccini including The Ring’s Waltraute and Fricka and the Princess in Puccini’s Suor Angelica. She has worked with soprano Jane Eaglen and others at Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music “Wagner Intensive.”
New England based Baritone Steven Fasano will play Mr. Gobineau, and has appeared with many of New York City’s major opera companies including Dell’Arte Ensemble, Opera Company of Brooklyn and Regina Opera Company of Brooklyn. He has performed world premieres including works by Vladamir Pleshakov and has recorded Jan Dimas Zelenka’s Missa Votiva.
Soprano Andrea Howland will play Mrs. Gobineau. She has appeared as a soloist in Mozart’s Missa Brevis in D, she also worked as a music educator with the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill Community Music School.
Mezzo-Soprano Julie DeVaere plays Mrs. Nolan. She has sung a wide repertoire with many opera companies including Opera Delaware, Michigan Opera Theatre and Dayton Opera. Opera News has lauded her performance of Carmen for its dramatic intensity.
Lucas Barkley is a pianist and coach from Pittsburgh, PA. He has collaborated with Undercroft Opera where he played in Carmen, Norma, The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, and Madama Butterfly. He has also worked with CO-OPERA, a collaboration between Pittsburgh Opera and Carnegie Mellon University which has premiered many new works.
