How did you get into Opera?
I got into Opera through playing opera pianola rolls, I especially liked Rigoletto, Don Giovanni and The Barber of Seville. I was 3 or 4 years old. I asked my aunt: What is Rigoletto? And she told me the story. It was haunting.
What, in your opinion, makes OCB unique?
OCB is unique in the way that allows audiences experience opera music in an intimate setting, fresh performances and many titles a year!
How do you relax when not on stage?
In my native country, I used to relax sipping cocoa leaves tea with lemon. Here I do not have the cocoa leaves.
Do you have any advice for other singers?
For other singers…singing is a call, a service, a passion…live it accordingly.
What are your dream roles?
I have already performed my dream roles.
Which colleagues do you admire?
Dead or alive? So many. I admire them all.
Favorite composer? Top 5: Verdi, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Mozart. They knew their stuff. And they wrote to please audiences, not to show off how brilliant they were.
Which character (not in your voice range) would you most like sing and why?
A character not in my voice range? I do not know…maybe Gilda or the Queen of the Night. Why? They were over the top good and evil respectively.
What other music do you listen to?
Other music I listen to: Oldies like Simon and Garfunkel, Beatles, Queen, Sui Generis. I love tango, zarzuela, Sephardic music, huayno.
Do you read books/watch movies to prepare for a role?
Absolutely yes!!! I study the libretto, read the original sources, and try to enter the soul of the character watching similar people and even animals.
How do you balance a career with a life offstage?
Trying to relax and enjoying each moment.
How do you unwind after singing?
After singing in OCB? A good slice of pizza near the Marble Hill station, with anchovies, onions, jalapenos and extra cheese.
The dreaded question: Have you ever appeared in Phantom of the Opera?
Nope! But is a terrific musical! But I prefer Fiddler…
